This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor to pay tribute to the celebrated British primatologist who passed away this year. It seeks to acknowledge individuals and groups that advocate for life on Earth.

Award Details

Initial honorees will be revealed during the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had supported the medal's establishment. “The concept of having this award, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “Her desire was she would like this to happen. This is likely due to the unique connection she shared with the festival.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes undertaken to build an environment improved for people, animals and the environment and offer support to continue such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus noted that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – will likely include several divisions.

“It’s going to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that very medal.

Sharing thoughts about the future for Earth, one figure said, “Honestly, it’s very hard to be optimistic. Present governance globally is conducting an assault on knowledge. This situation undermines collective action.”

“To be honest, things don’t look very good so we have to commence thinking again, more deeply about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not just global warming, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with the natural world.”

Inspiring Change

Therefore, it was noted it was an opportune moment to honor Jane Goodall's legacy. “It is believed that when we’re awarding this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to change the way we treat fellow creatures around us.”

A major topic currently involves the spread of false information. The focus of the upcoming festival will be “the search for truth”.

“It has become apparent that truth is becoming a subject of discussion where political interests are involved. This is a perilous development,” it was said. “The science of climate is a science; you cannot allow interference from politics in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The aspiration remains that the medal will inspire positive change. “It’s about motivating others to participate and to show concern and to strive in that direction, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we must focus on doing all that is possible,” it was added. “Be prepared for setbacks, but you still continue striving toward success.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection shared confidence that “given direction and once enabled, humans are capable of being diligent stewards of Earth”, highlighting the initiatives of a foundation that, among its other activities, assists the youth become engaged locally, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall often emphasized, our daily actions make a difference and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we make,” he said. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about beneficial initiatives currently in progress.”
